A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP

Within the framework of the Human First Program, Renault has joined forces with the Naudet brothers, producers of award-winning documentaries about 9/11 and the Notre Dame fire, to highlight the extremely close collaboration between Renault Group and the road safety teams. This alliance between engineering and R&D constitutes an amazing adventure dedicated to “the golden hour”, the precious minutes when rescue workers have a greater chance of saving lives.

FIREFIGHTER TRAINING

The only manufacturer in the world to have appointed a full-time Lieutenant-Colonel firefighter to engineering and the only one to collaborate regularly with road safety teams, Renault has donated more than 4,000 vehicles to the fire service and has developed courses to train more than 5,000 firefighters from 17 countries worldwide in only a few years.

RENAULT TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED WITH FIREFIGHTERS

Renault innovations to facilitate first responder intervention.

qrescue

Renault Qrescue

With QR codes on the windscreen and rear window, Renault Qrescue gives firefighters immediate access to the vehicle’s ‘rescue sheet’.
It provides firefighters with all the technical information they need (engine, battery location, fuel tanks, airbags, etc.) to allow them to work efficiently and safely to extract victims, saving up to 15 minutes of precious life-saving time.

Fireman Access

Even though Renault’s high-voltage batteries are designed to prevent fire outbreaks, a fire started by external causes can spread to the battery. The Fireman Access can be used to extinguish it in a few minutes, saving water and time.
A metal rupture disk seals the battery throughout its life to ensure watertightness in everyday use. However, if a fire starts, it breaks under the force of a high-pressure jet of water directed by firefighters allowing water to reach the battery directly.

SD Switch

The SD Switch is a mechanical switch that disconnects the battery from the electrical circuitry. Although our high-voltage batteries are designed to switch to electrical safety mode in the event of an accident, we recommend that firefighters use the SD Switch in the event of a violent impact to guarantee electrical safety.
The SD Switch works like a fuse, applied to a voltage of 400-600 volts. It disconnects the battery from the high-voltage electrical circuitry instantly.

ADVANCED DRIVER-ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

67% of drivers do not use driver-assistance systems unless they are activated automatically3, Renault is working to reverse this trend.

WHAT IS AN ADAS?

Advanced driver assistance systems are intelligent systems that rely on advanced technologies (radars, software, cameras, etc.) to assist drivers on the road.
Most ADAS work without human intervention, like autonomous emergency braking systems. All new Renault vehicles are fitted with advanced driver assistance systems4.

THREE TYPES OF ADAS FOR SAFE DRIVING IN ANY CONDITIONS

Advanced driver assistance systems are divided into 3 categories; safety, driving and parking. Their purpose is to enhance user safety and comfort while reducing the risk of a serious accident.

safety

Intelligent driver assistance systems analyse driving conditions, warn the driver of any risks and take action if danger is imminent.

driving

The various technologies make driving simpler and safer, for greater peace of mind.

parking

Parking aids make manoeuvring easy, enhance safety and protect your vehicle and your surroundings.

EXAMPLES OF RENAULT ADAS

SAFE EXIT OF PASSENGERS

Your vehicle warns the driver when one of the passengers opens a door. A light in the rearview mirror and a visual and audible warning on the dashboard are triggered if there is a proven risk.

BLIND SPOT WARNING

Active above 15 km/h, this system warns the driver, via a signal in the rearview mirror, of the presence of vehicles that are not in the driver’s field of vision.

EMERGENCY BRAKE ASSIST

In the event of a head-on collision risk, the system warns drivers so that they can take appropriate emergency action. The system brakes automatically if drivers do not react despite the various alerts emitted.

WHAT IS THE FIX4SURE SOLUTION?

Created by Renault, the “Fix4Sure” solution belongs to the list of passive safety equipment. This device is based on a special seat frame design as well as a low position of the seat buckles.
This prevents what is known as “submarining” in the event of a head-on collision, whereby the pelvis slides under the lap belt, compromising the more delicate abdomen.

R-129 “i-size” STANDARD, ADAPTED TO THE SIZE OF THE CHILD

The R-129 (or i-size) standard, launched in July 2013, enhances the safety of children in cars by imposing the Isofix attachment system, classifying seats according to the size of the child rather than their weight, and extending the mandatory period for rearward-facing installation (15 months and 80cm minimum). This standard will replace the R44 standard. Seats that comply with this new standard have been designed to protect against head-on and side impacts using latest generation test dummies.

THE FUTURE OF SAFETY AT RENAULT

Renault’s road safety policy is broken down into 5 areas; raise awareness, prevent, correct, protect, and rescue. Innovations are constantly emerging, for instance the Safety score, the Safety coach, and the Safety guardian, which are set to revolutionize safety at the wheel. More information coming soon.
